Buying directly from the owner? Financing is possible, and the ownership transfer needs handling with care.
A private sale usually gets you a better price than a dealer, because there is no margin in between. It also carries more risk, and lenders price that in.
There is no dealer standing behind the car. The lender must verify the seller's ownership, confirm there is no existing loan on the vehicle, and be satisfied about the car's condition through its own inspection. Fewer lenders operate in this space, and those that do charge more.
This is where private sales go wrong. The RC transfer must be completed at the RTO with Forms 29 and 30 signed by the seller. If the car was ever financed, the previous financier's No Objection Certificate must be obtained and the hypothecation removed first. Insurance must also be transferred within fourteen days, or a claim can be rejected outright.
Never hand over cash. The lender will normally disburse directly to the seller's bank account, which creates a clean record of the transaction and protects both sides. Insist on this even for the portion you are paying yourself.
Pull the vehicle's record on the Parivahan portal to confirm ownership, registration status and whether any hypothecation is recorded. Check for pending challans. Get an independent mechanical inspection. These three checks cost very little and prevent most of the problems people run into.
We identify lenders who genuinely fund private sales, and we walk you and the seller through the transfer sequence so the money and the papers move in the right order.
A direct purchase from the owner typically costs less than the same car on a dealer forecourt.
The lender pays the seller's bank account directly, which creates a clean record and protects both parties.
You can meet the actual owner, see the service book and ask about the car's real history, which a forecourt rarely offers.
The lender's valuation gives you an unbiased view of the car's condition before you commit.
| Car age | Usually up to 8 years at purchase, and under 12 years when the loan closes |
|---|---|
| Funding | 60% to 75% of the valuation, lower than a dealer purchase |
| Seller | Must be the registered owner, with the RC in their own name |
| Existing loan | Any hypothecation must be cleared and a No Objection Certificate produced |
| Credit score | 720 and above is preferred in this segment |
These are typical criteria. Individual lenders vary, and we will tell you which ones are flexible on your particular case.
You do not need any of these to enquire. We only ask for documents once we know which lender we are approaching.
